Divorces, deaths, births, job losses, marriages, and financial distress---these are the main reasons for people selling their homes in this market. I am often asked the question, "Why would anyone sell now if prices are so depressed." The answer is that many sellers cannot control when they sell. This afternoon I met with a woman in Southwest Minneapolis who has been in her home for four years and she and her husband has come to the conclusion that a divorce is necessary. The house must be sold and assists divided. Two weeks ago I met with two brothers in the Kingfield neighborhood who had finished cleaning out their family home and the house was now ready to list. Mom was 92 when she died and lived in the house up to weeks before she passed away. Saturday I met with a young couple that live in the Linden Hills neighborhood in a darling 2 bedroom home. Their 14 month old daughter and all her toys are driving them to a larger home. I have a friend whose home I just sold via a short sale due to the fact she changed jobs and the new job did not pay as well. She had put an addition on the house just as the value dropped on the house so she was selling less than her two mortgages on the house. In another case a guy got down on his knees and asked his girlfriend to marrying him. She said yes with the condition that they sell is downtown condo and get a "real" house. The stories and characters change, but the theme remains the same. The present housing situation does not fit them, and they must move on. I feel privileged that I can assist them with their transition on. It is not always an easy or a happy time, but in most cases I am able to get them to their next point in life and life does go on.
