Today is earth day. This day was created so many years ago that many people today do not know what it really stands for. The tree huggers of yesteryear wanted a day in which we took time to think about taking care of our planet. That is not a novel idea as if you go into the Bible you see many references about being good stewards of the earth. Not being wasteful has been a theme for a long time. Here are some of my suggestions for Earth Day. *Start a rain garden in your yard. By creating a rain garden by a down spout of your house you will help filter and cool the water before it enters the lakes and streams of your community. You will be growing flowers that butterflies, bees, and small birds will find food sources in. *Plant a tree in your yard. Tress help absorb the carbon monoxide we produce, provide nesting areas for birds, and bring a beauty that is hard not to enjoy. *Pick up litter. Now that the snow is gone and the winds of this past week are done blowing, we can gather trash and bring beauty back to our green spaces. *Start using cloth napkins. The amount of paper we are putting in our landfills due to paper napkins is heart breaking. Napkin rings were invented to identify the napkin of a person. That way the cloth napkin could be reused. Time to go back to those days. *Avoid using so many paper towels and use sponges or dish clothes. Paper towels once again are filing up our landfills. *Take a camera and take pictures of the beautiful environment you live in. Sit on a bench and without any music in your ears, a cell phone at your check, or a person next to you, just breathe. Happy Earth Day. Jane
