I live right in the heart of SW Mpls.. My lot is larger and special, but it is still a city lot. About 4 years ago my husband planted an apple and pear tree along the alley. Since we were new to the neighborhood, our neighbors had a good chuckle at this planting. One person asked me why we did not live in the country if we wanted fruit trees.
Well that person is not laughing this year. We have the largest and best tasting green apples on the apple tree. I myself am amazed. We must have a dozen or so apples I have picked them and am hording them as they are that good. We did nothing but water the tree. The squirrels have taken the pears. I would have loved to have tasted them.
It is curious what you can get out of your small plat of land. Those of us who live in the Midwest do not realize how in other parts of the country and world land is precious. Talk to someone from New York City and they will tell you they grow trees on the roof tops of their buildings. A client of mine from Japan could not believe how we waste land to open green space rather than crops. We can do more and better with our parcels of land. You might not know, perhaps next fall I will be able to bake an apple pie!
