The Bears are coming. This reminds me of when we were kids and we begged our parents to take us to the dump out by our lake home, so we could see the bears. We would be all tough and drive up with headlines shinning, windows down, and we would wait for those big creatures. Out of the darkness one then two bears would come. We would scream, roll up the windows, and beg Dad to turn the engine on and get us out of there. It took minutes for our hearts to return to normal.
Okay, we have asked the Bears to come to our field and we are pumped for them to come. For years Gopher fans have asked for real competition in pre-season games. They did not want to secure a bowl invitation by playing weak teams in the pre-season. We got what we asked for, the Bears!
Here is what I ask for. Stay a fan and don't be disappointed whatever the results are. We are going to see a small gopher go up against a big bear. Perhaps we should all quickly refresh ourselves with the story of David and Goliath. If we win, don't get too big headed about it. We have a full Big Ten Season to go. If the team does not win, don't let that tarnish the new stadium or your love of this team. These are student athletes and nothing more. They are there to play a game, and we are there to support them. It is for the love of the game and the team that we go to these games. Professional players who get paid large salaries perhaps need to answer to us not these players.
I think of those players who allow their bodies to take a beating, and then they have the press and the public to beat them up after the game. Our players can't run when they see the Bears. They will have four quarters to see them again and again. Too bad our weather will be like their California weather. It would have been great to serve them up an early, Minnesota, fall day. Cold and snowy!
